Monica Mandell, LMSW
I believe in beginning with the student.
How will I help?
My relationship with the student and their family begins with a consultation where all records are thoroughly reviewed. I want to learn all about the student to be able to gain a better understanding of what academic or social/emotional disabilities may be impacting your child in school.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, also known as IDEA, affirms the basic tenet that all students are entitled to a free and appropriate public education. Other Federal and State laws such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, The Every Student Succeeds Act (formerly known as the No Child Left Behind Act) and Dignity for all Students Act ensures that every student who receives special education services will be provided with a framework for academic success.
Resolving Your Issues Through Skilled Negotiation
What happens when this framework does not provide the necessary support? What happens when families attend special education meetings to find out how to provide a framework and they may not understand the special education lingo, vocabulary, assessments or placements? At MLM Advocacy, I help families and students feel less isolated as I take the time to explain the entire special education process to ensure that your child receives a free and appropriate public education, better known as FAPE.
At MLM Advocacy, I work with families who are seeking initial evaluations to those families who are seeking to change their child’s IEP. Together, as a team, we will take the time to understand what may be impacting your child in the classroom. More importantly, I help families feel less isolated and more prepared to collaborate with the district in order to find a way to help their child achieve academic success.
